Botox

Botox is a purified protein that reduces the appearance of moderate to severe frown lines between the eyebrows and other areas of the face and neck. It is administered through several small injections into the appropriate areas, which are determined by your experienced provider. The initial duration is typically 3–4 months.

What is Botox Cosmetic? A purified protein that has been used for over 16 years to treat a variety of medical conditions. It received FDA approval for cosmetic use of glabellar lines in 2002. It is approved in more than 75 countries and is one of the most widely researched medicines in the world. It is a simple procedure that temporarily improves the appearance of moderate to severe frown lines involving muscle groups of the upper face.

How does Botox Cosmetic work? A small number of tiny intramuscular injections block the body's natural chemicals (neurotransmitters) that stimulate the muscles to contract and create the appearance of lines due to overactive facial muscles. They take several days to relax the muscles and the effects of treatment typically lasts 3-4 months.

What is Botox Cosmetic treatment like? It is a quick, minimally invasive procedure that treats a group of muscles that cause the appearance of moderate to severe frown lines, forehead lines and/or crowsfeet. Your Physician or Physician Assistant will determine the location of the injections in order to achieve the best results. The procedure can be administered without anesthesia, but a topical anesthetic may be applied 30 minutes prior to the procedure to minimize discomfort.

Pre-treatment recommendations: Avoid use of any medications, including OTC remedies or supplements that contribute to thinning of the blood preferably for 2 weeks prior to your procedure. Examples of these products are aspirin, NSAID’s (ibuprofen, naprosyn, etc.), Vitamin E, St. John’s Wort, Bilberry, Dong Quai, Feverfew, Fish Oil, Garlic, Ginger, Ginkgo Biloba, Ginseng, and Red Clover. If you have any questions contact the office for clarification or consult with your pharmacist.

Post-treatment recommendations: Keep your head above your heart for a minimum of 12 hours or until the following morning; sleeping on two pillows is recommended. Be careful about bending over; it is important to bend at the knees and keep your head up. Refrain from exercise or any activity that increases your heart rate or blood pressure.
