Understanding the Breast Implant Removal Procedure

Breast implant removal surgery is performed under general anesthesia on an outpatient basis at either a surgery center or hospital. An incision will be placed along the lower fold of your breast or around the areola and the breast implants removed. The breast capsule, a layer of scar tissue that naturally forms around the implant, may also be removed at this time. The incision will be closed and a surgical drain placed at the incision site.

What You Need to Know About the Recovery Process

In general, breast implant removal, also known as breast explant surgery, has a shorter recovery process than your original implant surgery. If the implants are causing muscular or joint pain, you will feel nearly instant relief. After your breast implant removal surgery, you will be given a compression wrap to prevent fluid buildup during the recovery process. You may experience soreness, tenderness and/or sensitivity for approximately 6 weeks and will be given pain medication to help minimize your discomfort. In addition, you will need to limit activities such as driving for the first 1 to 3 weeks following breast implant removal surgery.

Are You a Good Candidate for Breast Implant Removal?

If you’ve been considering breast implant removal, you’re not alone. According to the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), 147,684 women in the United States had breast implant removal surgery in 2021 alone.

In general, you may be the ideal candidate for breast implant removal surgery if:

  • You are No Longer Satisfied with the Appearance of Your Implants
  • You Have Experienced Pain or Discomfort from Your Implants
  • You are Generally Healthy and at a Stable Weight
  • You are a Nonsmoker
  • You Have Realistic Expectations
